Committees are the backbone of the work that our association accomplishes to create the South Carolina schools our students and educators deserve. We require each region to be represented and the committees work best when they have a diverse slate of representatives.
The following committees are available:
- Constitution & Bylaws
- This standing committee shall study the constitution, bylaws, and standing rules and any amendments proposed thereto as provided in Article XII of The SCEA Constitution. The committee shall submit proposed amendments to the Representative Assembly for final action indicating the committee's recommendations of each proposal.
- Educator Rights
- Shall provide assistance by examining legal and administrative issues and by providing activities designed to prevent violation of rights. This committee shall review the procedures for providing legal and administrative assistance and make appropriate recommendations regarding criteria and procedures to the Executive Board.
- Elections
- Shall be responsible for the conduct of elections, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, Bylaws, and Standing Rules for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, District Directors, Directors-At-Large, NEA Director(s), and state delegates to the NEA Representative Assembly, for any vacancies occurring therein, and any other item on which votes are taken by printed ballots. The elections committee shall be responsible for the supervision of the accreditation and registration of delegates to the Representative Assembly.
- Human & Civil Rights
- Shall promote programs to improve interpersonal relationships.
- Legislative
- Shall submit a proposed legislative program to the Executive Board and then to the Representative Assembly for final approval.
- Membership
- Shall devise a statewide plan for the promotion of membership in the United Education Profession.
- Teaching & Learning Committee
- Shall promote programs for improvement of instruction in the public schools; shall urge the involved of teachers in decisions related to curriculum, textbooks, and other media selections, class size, and methods of a teaching; and shall promote selective recruitments, appropriate training and education for those seeking professional certification as educators.
Ad Hoc(s) are special committees established by the Representative Assembly or by the Executive Boards or by the President for the purpose of accomplishing a specific task within a limited period of time.
Below are the current Ad Hoc Committees available
- Charter School
- The committee will focus on key areas such as policy development, resource allocation, and community engagement, with the aim of enhancing the overall experience for students, educators, and families involved in charter education.
- Education Support Professional (ESP)
- This committee encompasses individuals in the education profession whose vital work supports one of the following nine categories: (1) Clerical Services, (2) Custodial/Maintenance Services, (3) Food Services, (4) Health and Student Services, (5) Paraeducators, (6) Security Services, (7) Skilled Trades, (8) Technical Services, and (9) Transportation Services
- Fine Arts
- This ad hoc is to promote the arts and the invaluable support it provides within our school community.
- The Fine Arts Ad Hoc aims to enhance awareness of the importance of arts education and advocacy, ensuring that our students have ample opportunities to explore and excel in various artistic fields. We believe that a robust arts program not only enriches the educational experience but also fosters creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation among our students.
- HBCU/Praxis
- This newly established ad hoc is to address the needs of South Carolina's rich tapestry of our nine HBCU institutions. This committee will create a supportive and collaborative network that provides appropriate resources to the Praxis program, ensuring we cultivate a more diverse educator workforce in our profession.
- Through this effort, we aim to create an environment that not only emphasizes the importance of diversity in education but also supports our HBCUs in their vital role in shaping future educators. Together, we will identify challenges and opportunities, share best practices, and develop strategies that promote inclusivity and equity within the education community.
- International
- This ad hoc committee is specifically designed for our international educators and ESL educators who provide vital support to students attending South Carolina's public schools.
- The primary goal of this committee is to foster collaboration, share resources, and enhance the educational experience for our international student community. Your unique insights and experiences will be invaluable as we work together to address the challenges and opportunities that arise in our increasingly globalized educational landscape.
- Literacy
- This ad hoc aims to address a wide range of literacy concerns within our communities.
- The primary focus of this committee will be to explore ways we can support literacy initiatives such as Read Across America. Additionally, we will work on advocating for the promotion of books and ensuring greater access to reading materials for all.
- This committee believes in fostering a love for reading and improving literacy rates are vital for the growth and development of our community
- South Carolina Early & Noble Educators (SCENE)
- This ad hoc committee is to support early career education employees. SCENE aims to create a vibrant community within The SCEA, tailored specifically for those in the first ten years of their career. Through collective efforts, we strive to foster an environment of support and solution-based advocacy, addressing the unique challenges faced by our members
- Special Education
- This committee will feature a dedicated group focused on addressing issues related to special education and advocating for the needs of students with diverse learning requirements.
- The ad committee is committed to creating an inclusive educational environment that supports all learners. We tackle various SPED issues, including curriculum development, resource allocation, policy advocacy, and enhancing communication between educators, parents, and the community. We believe that by bringing together unique perspectives and expertise, we can develop effective strategies to improve the educational experience for students with special needs.
- Y'all Means All
- This ad hoc committee is dedicated to promoting acceptance. At its core, "Y'all Means All" embodies the belief that everyone is included and welcomed, regardless of their identity and/or background. This phrase, which is especially prevalent in the Southern United States, emphasizes our commitment to embracing all individuals and fostering a supportive environment.
- This committee will focus on creating programs and events that celebrate diversity, promote understanding, and advocate for the rights of marginalized groups, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. We believe that by coming together and embracing our differences, we can build a stronger, more connected community where everyone feels valued and accepted.
