Impact of 2023 Government Shutdown

A small number of House GOP extremists – enabled by GOP leadership -- is again holding the U.S. government hostage—pushing extreme funding bills that are dead on arrival in the Senate and shred the social safety net still more.

Government shutdowns harm the economy as a whole, waste federal funds, and hurt individuals—especially the most vulnerable among us. 

Impacts of 2023 Government Shutdown

Delayed paychecks for as many as 2 million members of the active-duty U.S. military and Federal Education Association, the NEA affiliate that represents the men and women who teach and support their children in Department of Defense schools stateside and overseas
10,000 children losing access to Head Start, the Department of Health and Human Service’s program for 3 and 4 year olds from low-income families
7 million low-income mothers, pregnant women, and children under age 5 losing access to WIC assistance, the Department of Agriculture program that provides nourishing food and healthcare services
