COLUMBIA — On Tuesday at The South Carolina Education Association (The SCEA) Headquarters, The SCEA President Sherry East announced that The SCEA Political Action Committee (PAC) has voted to recommend Joe Cunningham for the 2022 South Carolina State Governor’s race.
“From Oconee to Horry, Chesterfield to Charleston, South Carolina families want the best education possible for their children, and educators and school staff want to provide it,” said The SCEA President Sherry East. “The South Carolina Education Association is proud to recommend Joe Cunningham as South Carolina’s next governor. To give every child an opportunity for a bright future, we need statewide leaders who will boldly and urgently address the five-alarm teacher and staff shortage crisis.”
The SCEA Fund for Children & Public Education (The SCEA FCPE) is a PAC established and funded by members of The SCEA to recommend and support public education champions for local, state, and federal office. No dues dollars enter the PAC and all donations made to the PAC are voluntarily made by members of The SCEA. The PAC recommendation process is member-driven, and candidates running for The SCEA-PAC-recommended office have the opportunity to seek the recommendation of The SCEA-PAC. Prior to earning The SCEA’s recommendation, Joe Cunningham completed a candidate questionnaire and participated in a screening interview with members of The SCEA serving on the PAC committee.
“Because Joe has taken the time to hear our educator voices and valued the input of The SCEA during his education roundtables, we know Joe is an authentic champion of public education,” said East. “He respects and listens to educators and school staff. He knows that our working conditions are your child’s learning conditions, and his plan to stop the educator shortage crisis addresses the root causes. We call on all educators and supporters of public education to unite across race, place, and faith to elect Joe Cunningham as the next Governor of South Carolina this November.”
The SCEA is the only professional association in South Carolina working with all educator advocacy groups and public education advocates in a coalition to elect champions of public education like Joe Cunningham.
